The Easton Fire Department has been awarded over $8,000 by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services (DFS) to support programs in the schools and senior community that provide fire and life safety lessons tailored for each age group. The department’s Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program will receive $5,175 for K-8 fire safety lessons, and the Senior SAFE program will receive $3,055 to assist with senior center presentations and home visits with smoke/CO alarm installations.
We would like to express our appreciation to State Sen. Walter Timilty, State Sen. Michael Brady, State Rep. Carol Doherty, the state Department of Fire Services and the Baker-Polito Administration for their continued support of our fire prevention and education programs.
According to DFS, which administers both programs, the rate of annual child fire deaths has decreased by 78% since the S.A.F.E. Program began in 1996. In 2021, Massachusetts marked two and a half years without a child fire fatality, the longest period in the Commonwealth’s recorded history. With the success of the student program, the Senior SAFE program was launched to help departments deliver fire safety education to older adults, who face a disproportionate risk of dying in a fire.
